What does a tire load index mean?
The load index is a code for the maximum load a single tire can carry at its rated pressure. It is the number just before the speed letter in the service description, so in 98H the load index is 98 and the speed symbol is H. Index 98 carries 750 kg, which is about 1,653 lb, and index 100 carries 800 kg (1,764 lb). The numbers do not rise in a straight line, so use the chart rather than guessing. This page covers indexes 60 to 130.
The chart below covers indexes 60 to 130. Kilograms come from the standard load index table as listed by Wikipedia and kfz-tech.de, which agree for this range. Pounds are the kilogram figure x 2.20462, rounded, and match a published pound chart to within 1 lb.

Frequently asked questions
What load index do I need?
At least the load index on your vehicle placard or in the owner's manual. To estimate, divide the heaviest axle load by two and pick the first index in the chart that is at least that many kilograms. Then choose an index at or above what the maker specifies.
What is load index 100 in pounds?
Index 100 is 800 kg, which is about 1,764 lb per tire.
Can I use a higher load index than the original?
Generally a higher index is not a problem for load capacity, but it can change ride and the tire must still be the size and type the vehicle maker approves. Never use a lower index than the original.
Does the load index mean I can always carry that weight?
The rating applies at the tire's rated inflation pressure. Follow the pressure on the vehicle placard, which federal rules require to list the tire sizes and cold inflation pressures.
