Formula and limits

The tool derives an approximate usable energy figure from official range × combined kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100. It multiplies that by the requested charge-window share and your electricity price. Charge time scales the official 120 V or 240 V full-charge field to the same window.

This is a planning estimate, not a charger promise. FuelEconomy.gov fields can be rounded, and the calculation does not separately add wall-to-battery losses. Real time and cost vary with charger power, onboard-charger limits, temperature, battery conditioning and utility billing. DC fast charging is not modeled.

Frequently asked questions

How does the calculator estimate EV charging cost?

It derives an approximate usable battery energy figure from the official EPA range and combined kWh per 100 miles, multiplies it by the requested charge percentage, then multiplies by your electricity price per kWh.

Does the charging cost include energy losses?

No separate charging-loss factor is added. EPA electricity-consumption fields reflect standardized vehicle energy use, while real wall-to-battery losses vary by vehicle, charger, temperature and battery conditioning.

Is the charge-time estimate for Level 1 or Level 2?

The tool uses the source's 120-volt or 240-volt full-charge field when available, then scales it to the requested charge window. It does not model DC fast charging.

Why is there no result for my EV?

FuelEconomy.gov field coverage varies. If range, electricity use or the selected voltage's charge-time field is missing, the tool cannot make the corresponding estimate.
