How it works

Total = line haul + accessorials + fuel surcharge. Accessorials = the sum of (amount × quantity) for each ticked line. Fuel surcharge = fuel percentage × line haul, or × (line haul + accessorials) if you tick that box. Worked example: $500 line haul, 20% fuel on line haul only, liftgate $75 and residential $100 gives $175 of accessorials, $100 fuel and a $775 total, with accessorials 22.6% of the cost.

What carriers say these services are: a liftgate is specialised equipment used to load or unload a shipment when the location has no dock, and it must be requested in advance because not all trucks have one (Old Dominion); R+L describes it as a platform at the back of a truck that raises or lowers freight. Residential or non-commercial delivery covers places such as residences, schools and airports, which carriers often charge extra for (Old Dominion). Inside delivery is freight brought beyond the dock or threshold (Old Dominion). Limited access locations are the ones a carrier lists in its rules tariff (R+L). Detention, reweigh and redelivery depend on what happens at the stop and can be added after delivery (Old Dominion).

What this does not decide

Definitions and prices are set by each carrier’s own rules tariff, so a service called the same thing can be billed differently. Many carriers also apply minimum charges, discounts, per-hundredweight pricing or caps, which this simple multiplier does not model. This is a quote-checking aid, not a rate or an offer. Confirm every charge with your carrier before booking.

FAQ

What are accessorial charges in LTL shipping?

Accessorial charges are fees for services beyond standard dock-to-dock pickup and delivery, for example a liftgate, delivery to a residence, limited-access locations, inside delivery or delivery appointments.

How much is a liftgate charge?

It varies by carrier and tariff and this tool does not assume a figure. Enter the liftgate amount from your quote.

Can accessorial charges be added after delivery?

Yes. Old Dominion says some accessorials, such as detention, reweighs and redelivery, depend on what happens when the driver arrives and can be added after the shipment is completed.

Does the fuel surcharge apply to accessorials?

That depends on the carrier’s tariff. The tool applies it to line haul by default and has a box to include accessorials.

How do I avoid accessorial charges?

Give accurate details up front, such as weight, size and delivery location, and request services like a liftgate in advance. Old Dominion lists accurate shipment information as the first way to avoid surprise charges.
