How it works
CBM per carton = length × width × height in metres. Total CBM = CBM per carton × number of cartons. Cubic feet = CBM × 35.3147 (exact from 0.3048 m per foot). For LCL, Maersk’s terms count the higher of gross cubic metres and gross weight in kilograms, treating 1 CBM as 1,000 kg. For air, the chargeable weight is the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight, where volumetric weight in kg = length × width × height in cm ÷ 6,000. Worked example: 100 cartons of 50 × 40 × 30 cm at 8 kg each are 6 CBM (211.9 cubic ft). Weight is 800 kg, so LCL is charged on 6 CBM; volumetric air weight is 6,000,000 cm³ ÷ 6,000 = 1,000 kg, so air is charged on 1,000 kg.
What this does not decide
The 1 CBM = 1,000 kg basis comes from one carrier’s LCL terms and applies where volumes are counted in weight and measure units; other lines and consolidators may quote differently, add minimums or round up. The 6,000 divisor is the common air convention, but some carriers and express services use other divisors. Pallets, packaging overhang and stacking rules can change the measured size. This is an estimate, not a rate quote.

FAQ
How do I calculate CBM?
Multiply length x width x height in metres for one carton, then multiply by the number of cartons. For centimetres, divide the product of the three sizes by 1,000,000.
What is 1 CBM in kg for LCL?
Maersk’s LCL terms treat 1 CBM as 1,000 kg and charge on whichever is higher, volume in CBM or weight in kg. Other carriers may differ, so check your quote.
What is the air freight volumetric weight formula?
Length x width x height in centimetres divided by 6,000 gives volumetric weight in kilograms. Maersk describes 6,000 as the industry standard; the chargeable weight is the higher of actual and volumetric weight.
How many cubic feet is 1 CBM?
One cubic metre is 35.3147 cubic feet.
Why is my carrier’s figure different?
Carriers round up, apply minimum charges and measure outside dimensions of the packed pallet or crate. Use their numbers for billing and this tool for planning.
