Generations by birth year
Your generation is set by the year you were born. This tool uses the definitions Pew Research Center publishes.
| Generation | Born | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Greatest Generation | Before 1928 | Pew Research Center |
| Silent Generation | 1928 to 1945 | Pew Research Center |
| Baby Boomers | 1946 to 1964 | Pew Research Center |
| Generation X | 1965 to 1980 | Pew Research Center |
| Millennials | 1981 to 1996 | Pew Research Center |
| Generation Z | 1997 to 2012 | Pew: 1997 onward (2012 end is a convention) |
| Generation Alpha | 2013 onward | Common convention, not Pew |
Worked example. Born in 1990 you are in Millennials (1981 to 1996). Born in 1964 you are in Baby Boomers (1946 to 1964), the last Baby Boomer year, and born in 1965 you would be in Generation X.
Pew itself says generational boundaries are not scientifically defined and are not universally agreed on, so other sources draw the lines a few years differently.
