The US and EU daylight saving rules
United States. Under 15 U.S.C. 260a, daylight time runs from 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March to 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. The statute says a state that lies entirely within one time zone may exempt itself by law, and some states with more than one zone may exempt part of the state. The current dates took effect on 1 March 2007 or one year after enactment, whichever was later, so this tool uses them from 2007.
European Union. Directive 2000/84/EC says that from 2002 onwards the summer-time period begins at 1.00 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time on the last Sunday in March and ends at 1.00 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time on the last Sunday in October, in every Member State.
Worked example for 2026. The second Sunday of March 2026 is 8 March and the first Sunday of November is 1 November, so US daylight time runs 8 March to 1 November. The last Sunday of March 2026 is 29 March and of October is 25 October, so EU summer time runs 29 March to 25 October. For 2027 the US dates are 14 March and 7 November, and the EU dates are 28 March and 31 October.
