How does KDP work out the printing cost?
KDP prints on demand and subtracts fixed cost + (page count x per-page cost) from each sale. Very short books pay the fixed cost only: black ink paperbacks up to 110 pages (108 on Amazon.com.au), premium colour paperbacks up to 40 pages, and black ink hardcovers of 75 to 108 pages. Large trim (wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in) has higher rates. Bleed settings and cover finish do not change the cost.
Worked example. A 300-page black-ink paperback in the US store: 1.00 + 300 x 0.012 = $4.60. The same 300 pages as a regular-trim hardcover: 5.65 + 300 x 0.012 = $9.25. These are the two worked examples printed on KDP's help pages.
The tool also shows the minimum list price, the cost of 100 extra pages, and the author price, because KDP charges the print cost for author copies.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost KDP to print a 300 page book?
A 300-page black-ink regular-trim paperback costs $4.60 on Amazon.com (1.00 fixed + 300 x 0.012). A hardcover of the same length costs $9.25 (5.65 + 300 x 0.012), per KDP's examples.
Do short books have a per-page cost?
Not within KDP's short-book ranges. Black ink paperbacks of 24 to 110 pages pay only a fixed cost (24 to 108 on Amazon.com.au), and black ink hardcovers of 75 to 108 pages do too.
What counts as large trim at KDP?
More than 6.12 in (155.5 mm) wide or more than 9 in (228.6 mm) tall. Large trim has higher fixed and per-page rates.
Why does the calculator reject some page counts?
KDP publishes ranges with gaps: premium colour paperbacks list 24 to 40 and 42 to 828 pages, and black ink hardcovers list 75 to 108 and 110 to 550. Standard colour paperbacks start at 72 pages and have no Amazon.com.au rate.
Does the cover finish or bleed change the print cost?
No. KDP says bleed settings and cover finish do not affect printing cost.
