35% or 70% royalty: which pays more on KDP?
The 35% option pays 35% of the list price excluding VAT. The 70% option pays 70% x (list price - VAT - delivery costs) on sales to customers in the 70% territories; sales elsewhere earn 35%. Delivery costs are the file size in MB times a per-MB rate (0.15 USD on Amazon.com), with a 0.01 minimum. Since 7 July 2026 the 70% price band on Amazon.com is 2.99 to 12.99 USD (it was 2.99 to 9.99). The 35% option has a minimum price that rises with file size: 0.99 USD under 3 MB, 1.99 USD from 3 to under 10 MB, 2.99 USD at 10 MB or more.
Worked examples. KDP's example for Germany: a 2.99 EUR list price, 7% VAT, 1 MB at 0.12 EUR per MB gives 0.70 x (2.99 - 0.20 - 0.12) = €1.87. For a 4.99 USD book of 2 MB on Amazon.com with no VAT: 35% pays $1.75; 70% pays 0.70 x (4.99 - 0.30) = $3.28.
Because delivery is charged per MB, the 70% option beats 35% until delivery reaches half the price net of VAT. Image-heavy files can flip that.
Frequently asked questions
What is the KDP eBook royalty for 35% vs 70%?
35% is 35% of the list price without VAT. 70% is 70% of the list price without VAT, less delivery costs, for sales in the 70% territories. Other territories earn 35%.
What price range qualifies for the 70% royalty?
On Amazon.com the list price must be 2.99 to 12.99 USD (from 7 July 2026). Equivalent bands apply elsewhere, for example 2.99 to 12.99 CAD, 1.77 to 12.99 GBP, 2.69 to 12.99 EUR and 3.99 to 15.99 AUD.
How much is the KDP delivery fee?
Delivery cost is the file size in MB times the marketplace rate: 0.15 on Amazon.com, Amazon.ca and Amazon.com.au, 0.10 GBP on Amazon.co.uk and 0.12 EUR on the German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch stores. The minimum is 0.01.
Is the 70% option always better?
No. If delivery cost exceeds half the price net of VAT, 35% pays more. Public domain works are eligible for 35% only.
Does VAT come out before the royalty?
Yes. KDP removes VAT (rate / (1 + rate) x the VAT-inclusive price) before applying the royalty rate.
