How is a KDP hardcover royalty calculated?
The formula is the same as for paperbacks: (royalty rate x list price) - printing cost. The rate is 50% for list prices at or below 9.98 USD (9.98 EUR, 7.98 GBP) and 60% at or above 9.99 USD (9.99 EUR, 7.99 GBP). Hardcover printing cost is a fixed cost plus a per-page cost; black ink books of 75 to 108 pages pay the fixed cost only.
Worked example. A 300-page black-ink regular-trim hardcover at 24.99 USD on Amazon.com: printing cost is 5.65 + 300 x 0.012 = $9.25, the rate is 60%, so the royalty is (0.60 x 24.99) - $9.25 = $5.74.
KDP's hardcover printing cost table has rows for Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and the EU stores, so this tool offers those three marketplaces.
