How does KDP charge the eBook delivery fee?
On the 70% royalty option KDP deducts delivery costs equal to the file size in megabytes x the delivery rate for the store: US $0.15/MB, CAD $0.15/MB, UK 0.10 GBP/MB, 0.12 EUR/MB on the German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch stores, and AUD $0.15/MB. KDP rounds the file size up to the nearest kilobyte, sets a minimum delivery cost of 0.01 in the store's currency, and rounds the result to two decimals. The 35% option has no delivery cost. KDP says the average delivery cost is about $0.06 per unit.
Worked example. A 5 MB file on Amazon.com costs 5 x 0.15 = $0.75 per sale. A 0.4 MB text-only novel costs $0.06. A 30 MB illustrated file costs $4.50, which is more than the whole 2.99 USD minimum price.
KDP computes the size from the converted file it delivers, so check the size in title setup after upload. This tool takes 1 MB as 1024 KB because KDP does not define it.
