How this is calculated
Travel fee = (round-trip km - free km) x rate per km + drive hours x drive rate + parking and tolls + any flat fee. Kilometres inside your free radius cost nothing, so a close client pays only the extras.
Worked example. A 120 km round trip with 40 km free leaves 80 billable km. At $0.70 per km that is $56.00. Add 1.5 paid drive hours at $30 ($45.00) and $15 parking: $116.00.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a photographer charge for travel?
There is no fixed figure. Many photographers cover their real vehicle cost per kilometre, plus paid drive time for long trips. Enter your own per-km rate and see what the trip adds.
Should I charge for drive time as well as mileage?
Mileage covers vehicle costs. Drive time covers hours you cannot book elsewhere, so long trips usually justify both. Set the drive rate to 0 if you include it in your base price.
What is a free radius?
A distance from your base that is included in the package price. Only kilometres beyond it are billed in this calculator.
Is this the same as the CRA mileage rate?
No. This sets what you charge a client. The CRA tool shows the allowance rate used for your own vehicle expense claims, which is a separate question.
