International · Validation

Swiss UID (CHE) number validator.

Check a Swiss Unternehmens-Identifikationsnummer (UID) against the modulo 11 check digit defined in the eCH-0097 data standard. Suffixes such as MWST are accepted and ignored, because they are not part of the UID.

How it works: multiply the first eight digits by 5, 4, 3, 2, 7, 6, 5, 4 and add them up. Subtract the remainder after dividing by 11 from 11 to get the check digit. A remainder of 0 gives 0, and a result of 10 means the number is never issued.

Inputs

CHE plus 9 digits. Dots, hyphens and a suffix such as MWST are fine.

Result

Enter a number and press Check.

How the Swiss UID check digit works

The Federal Statistical Office describes the UID as the country code CHE and nine digits, written either as CHE123456789 or as CHE-123.456.789. The nine-digit number is assigned at random and carries no information about the company. The last digit is a check digit defined in the eCH-0097 standard.

The eCH-0097 calculation
StepWhat happens
1Multiply digits 1 to 8 by 5, 4, 3, 2, 7, 6, 5, 4
2Add the eight products
3Divide by 11 and subtract the remainder from 11: that is the check digit
4If there is no remainder the check digit is 0; if the result is 10 the number is never issued

The standard's own example is 10932255, which gives CHE109322551: the products add up to 109, the remainder after dividing by 11 is 10, and 11 − 10 = 1.

Suffixes

BFS says the addition after a UID marks a commercial-register entry (HR), VAT liability (MWST) or both, and is not part of the UID. BFS describes HR, MWST and HR/MWST. This tool also accepts the French and Italian forms TVA and IVA and the abbreviation RC, joins with a slash, and ignores them in the calculation.

Format check, not a register lookup

A matching check digit means the nine digits are internally consistent. It does not show that the UID was issued or that the business is active. Use the UID register for that.

FAQ

What does a Swiss UID look like?

CHE followed by nine digits, written CHE123456789 or CHE-123.456.789. The dotted form is only for readability.

How is the Swiss UID check digit calculated?

The first eight digits are multiplied by 5, 4, 3, 2, 7, 6, 5, 4 and added. The remainder after dividing by 11 is subtracted from 11. No remainder gives 0, and a result of 10 means the number is never assigned (eCH-0097).

Is MWST part of the UID?

No. BFS says the addition after a UID (HR, MWST or HR/MWST) only indicates a commercial-register entry, VAT liability or both, and is not part of the UID.

Does a valid check digit mean the company exists?

No. It only means the number is internally consistent. Search the official UID register to confirm a company.

Check digit only, not a register lookup

This tool tests the structure and check digit of the number in your browser. It does not query any register, and a passing result does not show the number was issued or is still active. To confirm that, search the official UID register. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored or logged.
