Check a number’s format

This is a shape check that runs in your browser. It does not look anything up and nothing you type is transmitted anywhere.

Seven digits.

Format check for a CRA Business Number (9 digits, or 15 characters with a program account). It is not a provincial registry number.

Search the official register

The RJSC Connect is the authority on whether a business is registered in Nova Scotia. This page does not copy or proxy registry data and cannot verify anyone.

What the official sources say

Name notes

If you do not know the Registry ID, search by name and read the ID from the result. Use the status filter to separate active from inactive registrations.

Is this company registered in Nova Scotia? A checklist

  1. Search Nova Scotia’s official register (link above), not a third-party directory.
  2. Use the exact legal name from the contract, invoice or certificate. Then try shorter fragments.
  3. Confirm the legal name, entity type and status shown on the record match what you were given.
  4. Note whether the record is active or inactive, and the registered address.
  5. If you need formal proof, order the register’s certificate or summary rather than relying on a screenshot.
  6. Remember a CRA Business Number is a federal identifier. It does not by itself show registration in Nova Scotia.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Nova Scotia Registry ID?

The identifier for a registration with the Registry of Joint Stock Companies. Service Nova Scotia’s help page describes it as 7 digits.

Can I search RJSC by name instead of ID?

Yes. The province says you can search by the name or Registry ID, and filter by all, active or inactive status.

What does an RJSC search result show?

Names and addresses, partners, directors and officers, filed-document activity history and related registrations, per the province’s search page.

Is the 9-digit Business Number the same as the Registry ID?

No. They are separate identifiers: the Business Number is 9 digits and from the CRA, the Registry ID is 7 digits and from the RJSC.
