Costa Rica cédula format checker.

Verificar cédula: recognise whether a Costa Rican number looks like a cédula física, a cédula jurídica or a DIMEX, and see it formatted. This is a format check only; there is no check digit.

What it checks: a cédula física is 9 digits laid out 0P-TTTT-AAAA (province, volume, entry; leading zeros are often dropped); a cédula jurídica is 10 digits starting with 3, for example 3-101-123456; a DIMEX has 11 or 12 digits starting with 1.

What this does not tell you

Hacienda’s help page describing these formats could not be retrieved when this page was prepared, so the shapes come from python-stdnum, which cites Hacienda and PROCOMER. We found no published check-digit rule, so a match shows only that the shape is plausible. To confirm a taxpayer, use Hacienda’s official tax-status lookup. NITE numbers are not handled.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Costa Rican cedula have a check digit?

No public check digit is documented, so this tool recognises shapes only.

What do the groups in 0P-TTTT-AAAA mean?

The province digit, the volume (tomo) and the entry (asiento) in the civil registry.

What is a DIMEX?

The identification document for foreign residents, with 11 or 12 digits starting with 1.

Format and check digit only — not an official lookup

This tool works entirely in your browser. A passing result does not prove that a number was issued, is active, or belongs to anyone, and it is not verification by any government. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored or logged.
