Ecuador cedula validator.

Validar cedula: check a 10-digit Ecuadorian identity number, see its province and the expected check digit. Browser only.

How it works: An Ecuadorian cedula has 10 digits. The first two are the province (01 to 24, or 30 for Ecuadorians born abroad), the third is 0 to 5 for a person, and the last is a modulo 10 check digit: digits 1 to 9 are multiplied by 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, products over 9 lose 9, and the check digit is (10 minus sum mod 10) mod 10.

How the Ecuador Cedula check works

An Ecuadorian cedula has 10 digits.

Check digit procedure
StepWhat happens
1Multiply the first nine digits alternately by 2 and 1, starting with 2
2If a product is above 9, subtract 9
3Add the nine results
4Check digit = (10 minus sum mod 10) mod 10

Worked example, 171430710: 1x2 = 2, 7x1 = 7, 1x2 = 2, 4x1 = 4, 3x2 = 6, 0x1 = 0, 7x2 = 14 (folded to 5), 1x1 = 1, 0x2 = 0. The total is 27. 27 mod 10 = 7 and 10 - 7 = 3, so the cedula is 1714307103. The first two digits 17 are Pichincha.

What this tool cannot tell you

The Registro Civil is the authority for cedulas. A matching check digit does not show the number was issued or who holds it. A passing result means the number is well formed. It does not mean it was issued, is current, or belongs to anyone. Official sources to use instead: Registro Civil del Ecuador and Servicio de Rentas Internas (SRI).

Where each rule comes from

Not every issuer publishes its check rules. This table says, for each rule used here, who documents it and how firmly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I validate an Ecuadorian cedula?

Enter the 10 digits. The tool checks the province code, the third digit and recomputes the check digit. A pass means well formed only.

What do the first two digits of a cedula mean?

They are the province code, 01 to 24 for the provinces and 30 for Ecuadorians born abroad.

Why is the third digit limited to 0 to 5?

Personal cedulas have a third digit of 0 to 5, so this tool rejects higher values. python-stdnum also accepts 6, so a 6 here is a stricter reading; confirm such a number with the Registro Civil.

Is it safe to enter a cedula here?

The check runs in your browser and nothing is sent, stored or logged. Only enter numbers you are entitled to use.

Format check only — not an official verification

This tool checks structure and, where a public algorithm exists, a check digit, entirely in your browser. It does not query any government register, and it cannot confirm that a number was issued or to whom. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored or logged.
