RRSP calculator British Columbia: 2026 tax refund

A $10,000 RRSP contribution returns about $2,258 at $60,000 of income and $2,820 at $100,000 in British Columbia (2026 federal plus provincial tax). Each dollar you deduct saves the combined federal and provincial rate at the income it comes off, so the refund blends the rates across the slice you deduct. Your marginal rate at $60,000 is 28.20% and at $100,000 is 28.20%; a deduction that crosses a bracket edge saves less than the top rate times the amount.

How the British Columbia RRSP refund works

An RRSP contribution is a deduction, not a credit: it lowers your taxable income, and the tax you save is the federal plus British Columbia tax on the income you no longer report. In other words the refund is the sum of your combined marginal rates over the slice of income you deduct, so it is at most your contribution times the marginal rate at the top of your income and is lower when the deduction crosses into a cheaper bracket. Enter the income you would otherwise be taxed on and the amount you will claim; the calculator prices the tax with and without the deduction using the 2026 federal and British Columbia brackets.

British Columbia has seven brackets from 5.60% to 20.50% in 2026. CRA's July 2026 T4127 edition reflects a BC change to the lowest rate and the basic tax reduction; this page uses the full-year 2026 figures (lowest rate 5.60%). BC also has a basic tax reduction that phases out by about $44,952 of taxable income, which this calculator does not model, so results below roughly $45,000 may differ. CRA notes these July 2026 changes apply if enacted as proposed, so treat this province's figures as provisional until they are confirmed.

The 2026 RRSP dollar limit is $33,810 (CRA). Your own limit is 18% of your previous year's earned income up to that dollar limit, less any pension adjustment, plus unused room from earlier years. The exact figure is on your latest CRA notice of assessment. The limit does not vary by province.

What is the deadline to claim an RRSP refund for 2026?

Contributions made in the first 60 days of 2027 (until March 1, 2027) can be claimed on your 2026 return. Contributions made later in 2027 count for the 2027 return.

Is this the same as the CRA's number?

No. It is an estimate from the published 2026 brackets and the basic personal amount only. Credits such as the Canada employment amount, CPP/EI credits, and income-tested benefits are not included, and the CRA assesses the final refund when you file.
