How this works
Drop is a simple subtraction: drop = length in inches minus weight in ounces, so weight = length minus drop. A -10 drop is written as 10 here.
The checks come from the USA Baseball (USA Bat) BBCOR FAQ. USA BBCOR bats must have a drop weight no greater than -3, a length that does not exceed 36 in and a barrel no wider than 2 5/8 in; USABat bats do not have the -3 drop restriction, and no USABat can be manufactured longer than 32 in. The same FAQ says the NFHS Rules Committee voted to expand permitted high school bat drops to include USABat -4, -5 and -6 beginning with the 2028 season. This tool checks length and drop only.
Worked example. A 30 in bat with a -10 drop weighs 20 oz (30 minus 10). A 33 in bat that weighs 30 oz has a -3 drop. For USA BBCOR the bat must have a drop weight no greater than -3 and a length of no more than 36 in, so a 33 in, 30 oz bat is within it, while a 33 in, 28 oz (-5) bat is too light. A USABat has no drop restriction, but cannot be longer than 32 in.
Frequently asked questions
What does bat drop mean?
Drop is the bat’s length in inches minus its weight in ounces. A 31 in bat with a -8 drop weighs 23 oz.
Is a higher drop number lighter?
Yes. -12 is lighter than -5 at the same length. A -3 bat weighs only 3 oz less than its length in inches.
What is the BBCOR drop?
USA BBCOR bats must have a drop weight no greater than -3 and a length of no more than 36 in, per the USA Baseball FAQ.
Do USABat bats have a drop limit?
No. USABat bats do not have the -3 drop restriction, but they can be no longer than 32 in.
Does this apply to softball?
The subtraction does, because drop is length minus ounces for any bat. The BBCOR and USABat checks are USA Baseball baseball standards and do not cover softball certifications.
