Investment · TFSA

Years to fill your TFSA room.

New room arrives every 1 January. If you save more than that, you catch up on old room; if less, it keeps building.

If you have $30,000 of room and save $12,000 a year with $7,000 of new room each January, you fill it in year 5 (2030). Save $7,000 or less and you never catch up.

How it is worked out

Each year you contribute up to what you choose or your available room, whichever is less. The room left carries forward and the new yearly limit is added on 1 January. The year counted as filled is the first in which your contribution uses all available room. In 2026 the CRA limit is $7,000; later years use the figure you enter, since future limits are indexed to inflation and not yet known.

Example: $30,000 of room now, $7,000 of new room each January.

2027: as of 18 October 2026 the CRA limits table lists no 2027 TFSA dollar limit (the cell is blank, although the 2027 RRSP limit is shown). This page uses 2026 figures and will be updated once the CRA publishes the 2027 limit.

Frequently asked questions

How long will it take to use all my TFSA room?

Divide unused room by what you save above each year’s new room. With $30,000 unused, saving $12,000 against $7,000 of new room, it takes five years.

Does unused TFSA room carry forward?

Yes. The CRA adds unused room from earlier years to the new limit each January.

What if I save less than the new room each year?

The unused room never shrinks. It grows by the shortfall each year.

What new room should I enter?

The 2026 limit is $7,000. The CRA has not published 2027, so treat the number as an assumption.
