How couples use TFSA room

Room belongs to each person. The CRA says you may gift your spouse or common-law partner money so they can contribute to their own TFSA, and that this amount, and income earned from it, is not allocated back to you. Neither partner can contribute more than their own available room.

Combined limits-only room through 2026 for two continuous residents.

2027: as of 18 October 2026 the CRA limits table lists no 2027 TFSA dollar limit (the cell is blank, although the 2027 RRSP limit is shown). This page uses 2026 figures and will be updated once the CRA publishes the 2027 limit.

Frequently asked questions

Can my spouse and I share TFSA room?

No. Each person has their own room. You can gift a spouse or common-law partner money to contribute to their TFSA, but only up to their own available room.

Does gifting money to my spouse for their TFSA create a tax problem for me?

The CRA says the gifted amount and any income earned from it will not be allocated back to you.

What is the combined 2026 TFSA limit for a couple?

$14,000 of new room, $7,000 each, if both are 18 or older.

Do my spouse’s accounts count towards my limit?

No. Your room applies across all of your own TFSAs, and theirs across theirs.
