TFSA contribution room.

Your real cumulative room isn't this year's $7,000 — it's every year's limit since you turned 18 (or since 2009), added up, minus what you've contributed, plus what you withdrew in a prior year.

TFSA room accrues every year you're 18+ and a Canadian resident, whether or not you open an account or file a return. The annual dollar limit has changed nine times since 2009 — this tool walks the real year-by-year CRA table instead of assuming today's $7,000 always applied.

The year-by-year TFSA dollar limit

YearsAnnual limit
2009–2012$5,000/year
2013–2014$5,500/year
2015$10,000
2016–2018$5,500/year
2019–2022$6,000/year
2023$6,500
2024–2026$7,000/year

Add every year from the later of 2009 or the year you turned 18, and someone eligible for all of it has $109,000 of cumulative room by 2026 — regardless of whether they ever opened a TFSA before today.

Withdrawals come back — on a delay

Withdraw $5,000 in March 2026 and that $5,000 becomes new room on January 1, 2027, on top of whatever the 2027 annual limit turns out to be. It does not reduce your excess or increase your room in the same calendar year you withdrew it — a common and expensive misunderstanding that causes accidental over-contributions when people re-deposit a withdrawal in the same year.

Frequently asked questions

I never opened a TFSA before. Do I still have room from past years?

Yes. Room accrues automatically every year you're 18+ and a Canadian resident, whether or not you ever open an account. A 35-year-old opening their first TFSA in 2026 has the full cumulative room back to the year they turned 18 (or 2009, whichever is later) waiting for them on day one.

What happens if I over-contribute?

The CRA charges a 1% per month tax on the highest excess TFSA amount in the account each month it remains, with no lifetime cushion like the RRSP's $2,000 buffer. Withdraw the excess as soon as you find it.

Where can I check my official room?

CRA My Account shows your officially tracked TFSA room, though it can lag your most recent transactions by weeks. This tool is for planning; treat CRA My Account as the record of truth before you contribute close to your limit.

Does moving between TFSA providers change my room?

No — room is tracked per person across every TFSA you hold, not per account. A direct transfer between TFSA providers (done correctly, as an institution-to-institution transfer, not a withdrawal-and-redeposit) doesn't use up room or count as a withdrawal at all.

Estimate only — confirm with CRA My Account

This tool assumes continuous Canadian residency since your eligible start year and does not account for non-residency periods, which do not accrue TFSA room. It also assumes any withdrawals you enter were made in full prior calendar years. Confirm your actual room in CRA My Account before contributing near your limit.
