What size moving truck do you need?
U-Haul sizes a 10 ft truck for a studio or one bedroom, a 15 ft truck for one to two bedrooms, a 20 ft truck for two to three, a 26 ft truck for three to four and a 29 ft truck for four to six bedrooms. This tool starts from that guide, then checks your own volume and weight against each vehicle's inside volume and maximum load.
Worked example 1. 900 cu ft and 4,000 lb with no cushion: the 20' truck holds 1,016 cu ft and 5,700 lb, and the 15 ft truck at 764 cu ft is too small, so the answer is the 20' truck.
Worked example 2. A 2 to 3 bedroom home (guide: 20 ft truck) with 1,400 cu ft and 9,000 lb: the 20 ft truck's 1,016 cu ft is too small, and the 26 ft truck's 1,682 cu ft and 12,859 lb are enough, so the answer is the 26' truck.
Over the biggest truck. 3,000 cu ft needs 2 loads in the 29 ft truck (2,057 cu ft each), or a bigger service such as moving containers. Vehicle figures are U-Haul's published inside volume and max load; the table order here is by volume, and the 20 ft truck lists a lower max load (5,700 lb) than the 15 ft (6,385 lb), which the tool follows.
Frequently asked questions
What size truck for a 2 bedroom apartment?
U-Haul lists the 15 ft truck for 1 to 2 bedrooms and the 20 ft truck for 2 to 3 bedrooms. A sparsely furnished two bedroom may fit the 15 ft truck; a full one usually needs the 20 ft.
How many cubic feet is a 15 ft truck?
U-Haul lists the 15 ft truck at 764 cu ft inside, with a maximum load of 6,385 lb.
How do I estimate my volume in cubic feet?
Multiply length x width x height in feet for each large item or stack of boxes and add them. Round up; items rarely stack perfectly.
Is it better to rent a bigger truck?
If you are between sizes, the larger truck avoids a second trip. Fuel and rental price rise with size, so compare the totals.
