How calories burned are calculated
This calculator uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values published in the Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al.), the standard reference exercise physiologists and public-health agencies use to estimate energy cost by activity. One MET is roughly the energy your body uses at rest.
Formula
- Calories = MET × weight (kg) × duration (hours)
Example: running at 6 mph (9.3 MET) for 30 minutes at 70 kg burns roughly 9.3 × 70 × 0.5 ≈ 326 kcal.
Accuracy and limits
- MET values are population averages from the published Compendium, not a measurement of you specifically — fitness level, terrain, and effort all shift the real number.
- This estimates energy burned during the activity itself; it does not include your resting metabolic rate for the rest of the day (see the TDEE calorie calculator for that).
- Not medical or clinical advice — for precise figures, a lab-based metabolic test or a heart-rate-based fitness tracker calibrated to you will be more accurate.
