How this is calculated — and why it's a range, not a quote

Figures are calibrated to HireAHelper's published U.S. moving-cost data (Transportation Cost Database and transaction data, current as of 2026, hireahelper.com/moving-cost-calculator): full-service local move costs by home size ($879–$2,300), full-service hourly crew rates by crew size ($120–$240/hr), a long-distance (1,200-mile) reference cost of $6,261.43 with a published range of $5,077.86–$7,975.00 across home sizes, and DIY truck-rental ranges of $400–$780 (local) and $1,397.22–$3,453.53 (long-distance).

Moves at 100 miles (161 km) or under use the published hourly-rate spread for an appropriately sized crew, applied to the local home-size cost. Moves beyond that use the verified 1,200-mile figure scaled proportionally to your distance (floored so a long-distance move never estimates cheaper than a local one), then spread using the source's own verified long-distance range ratio (0.81×–1.27×). DIY figures interpolate the two published spans across home size, then apply the same distance scaling. None of this is a substitute for a written binding estimate — real quotes depend on exact weight, stairs/elevator access, packing services, insurance, and the date you move (peak summer season costs more everywhere).

This is a typical range for planning, not a quote. Get 3 written in-home or video estimates from licensed, insured movers (check for a USDOT number on interstate moves) before you book.
