How much of a bag's volume your products can actually fill once you allow for gaps. 70% is a common rule of thumb, not a published standard; measure your own kit if you can.

L

Maker's stated capacity, or length x width x height in cm divided by 1,000.

Worked example

Three palettes at 15 x 12 x 2 cm (1,080 cm³), a brush roll at 25 x 20 x 6 cm (3,000 cm³), two bottles at 4 x 4 x 11 cm (352 cm³) and a pouch at 18 x 8 x 6 cm (864 cm³) come to 5,296 cm³, which is 5.3 L packed tight. At 70% packing efficiency you need 7.6 L, so an 8 L bag fits with 0.4 L to spare. In the liquids list, the 30 ml foundation and 50 ml moisturizer are under 100 ml and the 118 ml setting spray is over the limit.

How it works

Each item's volume is count x length x width x height in cm³, added up and divided by 1,000 for litres. Needed volume = packed volume / packing efficiency. Boxes are measured as rectangles, so round bottles are slightly over-counted, which is the safe side. Soft bags flex and hard cases do not, so allow extra for a rigid train case.

The liquids check compares each container's printed size with the per-container limit you set. It is the size of the container, not how full it is, that counts under the US rule. Rules for carry-on liquids vary by country, airport and airline and can change; check the one you fly with.

Sources and basis (opened 2026-10-08): Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels Rule | Transportation Security Administration (3.4 ounces / 100 milliliters or less per item, in a quart-sized bag, for carry-on). The 70% packing efficiency is a common rule of thumb, not a published standard. Everything else is arithmetic on the sizes you enter.

FAQ

What size makeup bag do I need?

Enter the length, width and height of each product and the tool adds the volume and allows for gaps, then compares it with your bag in litres.

What is the carry-on limit for makeup liquids?

The US TSA states 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item, packed in a quart-sized bag. Other countries and airlines have their own rules, so check where you fly.

Do powders and palettes count as liquids?

Creams, gels, pastes and aerosols can count as liquids. For powders and anything else you are unsure about, check the screening rules for your airport.

Why is a packing efficiency used?

Products are not shaped like boxes, so they never fill a bag completely. 70% is a rule of thumb you can change.

Is anything stored?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is saved or sent.
