Worked example
Eight visits a year at $85 with a 20% tip: the tip is $17, so each visit is $102 and the year is 8 × 102 = $816, or $68 a month. Grooming at home with $400 of equipment and $120 of supplies a year costs $120 a year after the first, which is $696 less, so the equipment pays back in 400 ÷ 696 = 0.57 years, about 7 months.
How it works
Per visit = price + add-ons + travel + tip, where the tip is a percentage of price plus add-ons. Yearly = visits × per visit + extra nail trims × fee + home supplies, multiplied by the number of dogs. The home comparison is equipment (once) + supplies per year; the payback is equipment ÷ yearly saving.
The tool has no price data: use your groomer’s price list. The home comparison counts money only, not your time or the risk of nicks and stress. Many breeds with long or double coats are best left to a professional, and your vet can advise on coat care. The visit count follows how often your dog needs a groom, which differs by coat.

FAQ
How much does dog grooming cost per year?
It depends on your groomer, dog size and coat and how often you go. Enter your own price and visits and the calculator totals them.
How do I calculate a tip?
Enter a percentage. It is applied to the price plus add-ons for each visit. Enter 0 for no tip.
Is grooming at home cheaper?
Often on money alone, once the equipment is paid for. The calculator shows the payback time. It does not value your time or the dog’s comfort.
How many visits a year?
Divide 52 by the weeks between visits, or ask your groomer how often your dog’s coat needs it.
Does it work for several dogs?
Yes. Enter the number of dogs and it multiplies the per-dog yearly cost.
