Worked example

A $60 bag of 12 kg food fed at 250 g a day. 12 kg is 12,000 g, so the bag lasts 12,000 ÷ 250 = 48 days. The cost per day is 60 ÷ 48 = $1.25, which is $8.75 a week, $38.02 a month and $456.25 a year (365 days), or $5.00 per kg and $2.27 per lb.

How it works

Days per bag = bag weight ÷ grams fed per day (all pets together); cost per day = bag price ÷ days per bag. Pounds and ounces convert at the exact definitions 1 lb = 453.59237 g and 1 oz = 28.349523125 g. Cups are turned into grams with the grams-per-cup figure you enter, because a cup of one food does not weigh the same as a cup of another.

The tool does not tell you how much to feed. Use the feeding guide on the food and your vet’s advice for your pet’s size and condition. Add treats and toppers as extra grams if you want the total. To check calories, see the dog and cat calorie calculator.

Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-08): arithmetic on the numbers you enter; no published price or rate data is used. Unit conversions use the exact international definitions of the pound and the ounce.

FAQ

How do I work out dog food cost per day?

Divide the bag price by the number of days it lasts. Days = bag weight ÷ daily amount fed. The calculator does both steps.

How do I convert cups to grams?

Weigh one level cup of your food on a kitchen scale and enter the grams. The figure differs between foods, so there is no single value.

Does it work for cat food?

Yes. It works for any dry food sold by the bag. For cans or pouches, enter the case price, the case weight and the grams fed per day.

How many days are in a month here?

Monthly cost is the yearly cost divided by 12, using 365 days a year.

Does this tell me how much to feed?

No. Use the feeding guide on the label and your vet’s advice.
