Mbps to MB/s: divide by 8

A byte is 8 bits, so megabits per second divide by 8 to give megabytes per second. 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s, 500 Mbps is 62.5 MB/s and 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) is 125 MB/s. Internet plans and link speeds use bits; browsers, file managers and download clients usually show bytes. The tool uses decimal prefixes (1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits per second, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes) and also lists MiB/s, where 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes.

Worked example. 100 Mbps = 100,000,000 bits per second = 12,500,000 bytes per second = 12.5 MB/s = 11.92 MiB/s. Real downloads usually run below the plan speed because of protocol overhead, Wi-Fi conditions and the server, so a speed test is a better input than the advertised figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?

Divide by 8. 80 Mbps is 10 MB/s.

How many MB/s is 1 Gbps?

1 Gbps is 1,000 Mbps, which is 125 MB/s.

Why is my download slower than my Mbps plan divided by 8?

Plan speeds are a ceiling. Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi, the server, your disk and other devices on the connection reduce the rate you actually get.

Is Mbps the same as MBps?

No. Mbps is megabits per second and MBps (or MB/s) is megabytes per second. 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbps.
