How long does the first cloud backup take?

Home connections are often much slower uploading than downloading, and the first backup has to move everything. Running time is data in bits divided by upload speed in bits per second. Dividing that by the hours per day the backup is allowed to run (for example overnight only) gives calendar days. Set the speed from an upload speed test, not the download figure on your plan.

Worked example. 2 TB is 16,000,000,000,000 bits. At 20 Mbps that is 800,000 seconds or 222.2 hours. Running 8 hours a day it takes 27.8 days and uploads 72 GB a day. The same backup running 24 hours a day takes 9.3 days. Later backups only send changes, so they are much smaller.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to upload 1 TB at 10 Mbps?

1 TB is 8 x 10^12 bits. At 10 Mbps that is 800,000 seconds, about 9.26 days if it runs around the clock.

Why use hours per day?

Many people limit backups to nights or idle hours so streaming and work are not slowed. The tool scales the running time into calendar days.

Do later backups take as long?

Typically not. After the first full upload, backup software sends only new or changed data, though that depends on the product.

What if my provider throttles uploads?

Enter the throttled speed, or lower the efficiency percentage, to model it.

Ideal-case arithmetic. Provider throttling, file counts, encryption and deduplication change real results; check your backup provider for specifics.
