MB to GB, GB to MB and bits to bytes
A byte is 8 bits. Under the SI prefixes, which NIST says the IEEE uses, kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000, so 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes and 1 GB is 1,000 MB. The binary prefixes kibi, mebi, gibi and tebi are powers of 1,024 (2^10, 2^20, 2^30, 2^40), so 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes and 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. KB, MB, GB and TB are decimal (powers of 1,000); KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB are binary (powers of 1,024); lowercase b means bits and uppercase B means bytes.
Worked example. 1 GB is 1,000 MB, 1,000,000,000 bytes and 8,000,000,000 bits. In binary units the same 1 GB is 0.9313 GiB or 953.67 MiB. Going the other way, 1 GiB is 1.0737 GB. To turn megabytes into gigabytes, divide by 1,000; to turn gigabytes into megabytes, multiply by 1,000.
Frequently asked questions
How many MB are in a GB?
In decimal (SI) units 1 GB is 1,000 MB. In binary units 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. Many operating systems and file managers mix the two, which is why sizes can differ slightly between tools.
How do I convert bits to bytes?
Divide the number of bits by 8. 64 bits is 8 bytes, and 8,000,000 bits is 1,000,000 bytes, or 1 MB.
What is the difference between MB and Mb?
Uppercase B is bytes and lowercase b is bits. 1 MB is 8 Mb. Internet speeds are usually quoted in megabits per second, file sizes in megabytes.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
A gigabyte is 10^9 bytes and a gibibyte is 2^30 bytes (1,073,741,824). A GiB is about 7.4 percent larger than a GB.

- NIST, "Prefixes for binary multiples", opened 15 October 2026. kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi are 2^10, 2^20, 2^30, 2^40; under SI mega means 1,000,000, so 1 MB = 10^6 bytes and 1 GB = 10^9 bytes
- Wikipedia, "Binary prefix", opened 15 October 2026. Windows still uses "MB" and "GB" for binary multiples when showing drive capacities (a 300 GB drive reported as 279.4 GB, a "1 TB" drive as 931 GB), while Mac OS X, Ubuntu and Debian were updated to show decimal

Scope
Unit arithmetic only. Some software labels binary quantities with decimal names (for example reporting GiB as "GB"), so check which definition your tool uses.
