Mixed numbers and improper fractions

A mixed number is a whole number and a proper fraction together, such as 1 3/4. An improper fraction has a numerator that is not smaller than its denominator, such as 7/4. Both show the same amount.

Improper to mixed. Divide the numerator by the denominator, write the whole-number answer, then put the remainder over the denominator. For 11/4: 11 ÷ 4 = 2 with a remainder of 3, so the answer is 2 3/4. For 10/3 the answer is 3 1/3.

Mixed to improper. Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and put the result over the denominator. For 3 2/5: 3 × 5 = 15, 15 + 2 = 17, so the answer is 17/5. For 2 1/9 the answer is 19/9.

Improper fractions are easier to use in formulas, because it is not obvious whether the parts of a mixed number are added or multiplied. Mixed numbers are easier to read in everyday use.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert an improper fraction to a mixed number?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole-number answer is the whole part and the remainder goes over the denominator: 11/4 = 2 3/4.

How do you convert a mixed number to an improper fraction?

Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator and write the total over the denominator: 3 2/5 = 17/5.

What is an improper fraction?

A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator, so it is worth 1 or more.

Which is better, a mixed number or an improper fraction?

For mathematics, improper fractions are usually easier to calculate with. For everyday use, mixed numbers are easier to picture.

How do I enter a negative mixed number?

Put the minus sign on the whole number, for example -2 1/3. The calculator treats it as the negative of 2 and 1/3.
