Creator tax · U.S. self-employed
Creator self-employment tax set-aside calculator.
Turn a year of platform payouts, sponsorships and affiliate income into self-employment tax, an income tax set-aside you control, take-home pay and a quarterly figure.
SE tax = 15.3% of 92.35% of net profit (12.4% Social Security up to the wage base plus 2.9% Medicare). Half of it is deducted before your own income tax rate is applied. Example: $50,000 net with a 12% rate gives $7,064.78 of SE tax and a $12,640.89 set-aside, about $3,160.22 a quarter.

Worked example
A creator enters $50,000 of net profit and a 12% income tax rate. SE earnings are $50,000 × 92.35% = $46,175.00. Social Security is 12.4% of that ($5,725.70) and Medicare is 2.9% ($1,339.08), so SE tax is $7,064.78. Half of it, $3,532.39, comes off before the 12% rate is applied to $46,467.61 for $5,576.11. The set-aside is $12,640.89 (25.3% of net), leaving $37,359.11, and a quarter is $3,160.22. The 12% is only an input for the example.
How it works
- Net earnings = income minus ordinary business expenses.
- SE earnings = net × 92.35%. If that is under $400, SE tax is zero.
- Social Security = 12.4% of SE earnings up to the wage base; Medicare = 2.9% of all SE earnings.
- Half of SE tax is deducted when working out income tax.
- Income tax = (net minus half of SE tax) × your rate.
- Set-aside = SE tax + income tax; quarterly = set-aside ÷ 4.
This is the creator-focused simplification of the fuller 1099 tax set-aside calculator, which applies 2026 brackets and a state rate. Use this page when you already know the rate you want to plan with, or to compare several rates. To combine several income streams first, use the creator income mix calculator.
What this does not cover
- Federal brackets, the standard deduction, the qualified business income deduction, credits and state or local tax: your rate input stands in for them.
- The 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on high earners, other income such as a W-2 job, and a spouse’s income.
- Safe-harbor and underpayment-penalty rules for estimated payments; see due dates.
- Canadian, UK or other tax systems (Canadian creators: self-employed CPP calculator).
- Platform withholding on non-U.S. creators and sales or VAT on products.
Methodology and sources (retrieved 2026-10-19)
The rates and the $400 test come from the IRS pages below; the wage base is a dated constant (2026 $184,500 from IRS Topic 751 and SSA; 2025 $176,100 from SSA) that you can override. The IRS states the $400 test as net earnings from self-employment of $400 or more; this page applies it to the 92.35% amount, as our 1099 set-aside calculator does. Nothing here is a prediction: the income tax rate, income and expenses are yours.

- SSA contribution and benefit base (2025 $176,100; 2026 $184,500)

Frequently asked questions
How much should a YouTuber set aside for taxes?
There is no single number. In the example above, $50,000 of net profit with a 12% income tax rate gives a 25.3% set-aside, but your rate, expenses and state differ. Enter your own rate and compare; this page gives a planning figure, not a requirement.
What is 92.35% in self-employment tax?
The IRS says the amount subject to self-employment tax is generally 92.35% of net earnings from self-employment (IRS Topic no. 554).
Do I pay self-employment tax on creator income under $400?
The IRS says you usually pay it if net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more. This calculator tests 92.35% of net against $400. Income can still be taxable below that level.
Do I deduct half of self-employment tax?
Yes, the IRS lets you subtract half of SE tax when working out adjusted gross income (Schedule SE and Schedule 1). It lowers income tax, not SE tax, and this page does the same.
Should I use the 2025 or 2026 wage base?
Use the year of the income. The Social Security part stops at $184,500 of SE earnings for 2026 and $176,100 for 2025. You can type any other figure into the override.
Does this include state tax?
Not as a separate step. If you want a state tax in the plan, include it in the rate you enter.
