Worked example

10,000 subscribers with a 40% open rate is 4,000 opens a send. At a $25.00 CPM one sponsor placement is 4,000 / 1,000 x $25.00 = $100.00. Selling 75% of one placement per send gives $75.00 a send; with 4 sends a month that is $300.00, or $3,600.00 a year, $0.03 per subscriber per month.

How it works

Opens = subscribers x open rate. Each placement earns opens / 1,000 x your CPM, multiplied by the number of placements per send and the share you actually sell. There is no built-in benchmark: CPM, open rate and sell-through differ by niche and list, so enter your own.

Email apps can record automated opens, which makes open rate a soft number; sponsors often ask for click counts too. If you charge a flat fee per placement, divide the fee by opens / 1,000 to see the CPM it implies. The result is an estimate, not a promise of earnings.

Should I price per open or per subscriber?

Per open is common because it tracks the people who actually read. The calculator multiplies subscribers by your open rate, then by CPM per 1,000 opens.

What if I charge a flat fee per ad?

Divide the fee by opens / 1,000 to get the CPM it implies, then enter that CPM. For 4,000 opens, a $100.00 flat fee is a $25.00 CPM.
