How skilled employment points are awarded

Work outside Australia earns 0 points under 3 years, 5 points from 3 years, 10 points from 5 years and 15 points from 8 years. Work in Australia earns 0 points under 1 year, 5 from 1 year, 10 from 3 years, 15 from 5 years and 20 from 8 years. The two are added and capped at 20.

Worked example. 5 years overseas (10 points) plus 3 years in Australia (10 points) is 20 points. 8 years overseas (15) plus 5 years in Australia (15) is 30 before the cap, so 20 points count.

Home Affairs counts only employment in your nominated skilled occupation or a closely related one, for at least 20 hours a week, within the 10 years before you are invited. Australian employment counts only while you held a substantive visa or a Bridging A or B visa and complied with its conditions. The tool only does the arithmetic: whether your jobs qualify is a matter for your skills assessment and the department.
