PTE Academic scores that earn Australian points
For PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs sets these minimums in each skill:
- Competent (0 points): 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing, 54 speaking.
- Proficient (10 points): 58 listening, 59 reading, 69 writing, 76 speaking.
- Superior (20 points): 69 listening, 70 reading, 85 writing, 88 speaking.
For a PTE Academic taken on or before 6 August 2025 the earlier table applies: 50, 65 and 79 in every skill. The two versions share a name, so check the date on your score report. Results are normally valid for three years for skilled visa purposes, and Home Affairs states that older results may be used until 6 August 2028 depending on the visa.
The reason to look at components rather than the overall score is that the writing and speaking marks for Superior English are much higher than listening and reading. Scoring 88 in speaking and 69 in listening still fails Superior if writing is 84.
