How the Australian skilled migration points test works
The 189, 190 and 491 visas are points based. To be invited you need to meet or exceed 65 points on the points test, based on the claims in your SkillSelect Expression of Interest. Points come from age (up to 30), English (up to 20), skilled employment (capped at 20 across overseas and Australian work), your highest qualification (up to 20), and a set of extras: specialist education 10, the Australian study requirement 5, a Professional Year 5, a credentialled community language 5, regional study 5, and partner skills or being single 10.
The subclasses differ in one place. A state or territory nomination adds 5 points for the 190 and 15 points for the 491, where family sponsorship also earns the 15. The 189 has no nomination points.
Worked example. A 30-year-old with Proficient English, 5 years of overseas skilled work, a bachelor degree and no partner scores 30 + 10 + 10 + 15 + 10 = 75 for the 189. The same person nominated by a state for the 190 scores 80, and for the 491 scores 90.
Reaching 65 only makes you eligible to lodge. Invitations for the 189 go to the highest scores first, and the by-occupation minimums in the latest published round ranged from 65 to 100 points. The invitation rounds tracker shows them.
Frequently asked questions
How many points do I need for an Australian skilled visa?
You need at least 65 points on the points test to be invited to apply for the 189, 190 or 491 visa. Home Affairs states that without 65 points you will not be invited, and the score on your invitation can be higher than 65 depending on your claims.
What is the difference between 189, 190 and 491 points?
The points table is the same for all three except nomination. A state or territory nomination adds 5 points for the 190 and 15 points for the 491, and a 491 family sponsorship also adds 15. The 189 adds nothing for nomination.
Is 65 points enough to get an invitation?
Not usually for the 189. 65 is the minimum to lodge. In the 4 June 2026 round, minimum scores by occupation ran from 65 to 100, and most occupations in the table needed 80 or more.
Are skilled employment points capped?
Yes. Overseas and Australian skilled employment points are added together and capped at 20, so 8 years overseas (15) plus 8 years in Australia (20) still counts as 20.
