Competent, Proficient and Superior English
Australia does not award points for an overall band. Home Affairs sets a minimum score in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking for each level, and your level is the highest one you meet in all four. Competent English is worth 0 points, Proficient 10 and Superior 20. A strong overall score does not help if one component falls short.
For IELTS the levels are 6, 7 and 8 in every component. For PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025 the marks differ by component: Proficient is 58 listening, 59 reading, 69 writing and 76 speaking, and Superior is 69, 70, 85 and 88. Tests taken before 7 August 2025 can still be used until 6 August 2028, subject to the visa and a three-year validity rule, and PTE then was 50, 65 and 79 in every component.
Home Affairs does not accept tests delivered entirely online (remote-proctored) and the TOEFL iBT must be registered under “Taking TOEFL for Australia”. The MET has no Superior level in the Home Affairs table, and OET letter grades from the older table are not modelled here.
Frequently asked questions
How many points is Proficient English worth in Australia?
Proficient English is worth 10 points and Superior English 20 points on the skilled migration points test. Competent English scores 0 points. Home Affairs says the 189 requires at least Competent English at the time of invitation.
What IELTS score do I need for Superior English?
You need at least 8 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking on IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. Proficient English needs 7 in each component.
Do old PTE scores still count?
Home Affairs says a result from a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 may be used as evidence for visa purposes until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa and the three-year validity rules. Choose the earlier option in the tool to apply the older scores.
Is my overall score what matters?
No. Every level is defined by minimum scores in each of the four components, so the lowest component decides your level.
