Age points for the 189, 190 and 491 visas

Home Affairs awards age points from a table: 25 points from age 18 up to 25, 30 points from 25 up to 33, 25 points from 33 up to 40, and 15 points from 40 up to 45. From 45 there are no points and you cannot be invited. Home Affairs requires you to be under 45 when it invites you to apply, and assesses most points test criteria at the time of invitation, so a birthday that falls between your EOI and an invitation can change the result.

Worked example. Someone born on 10 April 1995 has 30 points until the day before their 33rd birthday, 10 April 2028, then 25 points from 10 April 2028, and 15 points from 10 April 2035. On 16 October 2026 they are 31, so the next change is the drop on 10 April 2028.

Because the 30 point band is eight years long, an EOI that reaches its target score before a birthday drop can lose 5 points on that date. Plan the date you expect to be invited rather than the date you submit.

Frequently asked questions

At what age do you get maximum points for Australian PR?

The maximum of 30 age points applies from the 25th birthday until the day before the 33rd birthday, according to the Home Affairs points table.

Is age counted at EOI or at invitation?

Home Affairs says you must be under 45 when it invites you to apply, and that most points test criteria are assessed at the time of invitation. A birthday that falls between your EOI and your invitation can therefore move you into a different age band.

What is the age limit for the 189, 190 and 491 visas?

You must be under 45 when invited to apply. The points table has no points beyond 44 years.

How are 29 February birthdays handled?

The tool treats the birthday as 1 March in years that are not leap years. Home Affairs does not publish a separate rule in the points table, so confirm the exact date with the department if your birthday falls on 29 February.
