How the pronunciation checker works

Your browser exposes the voices installed on the device through the Web Speech API. This tool filters them by language, then speaks your word with the voice you choose, or with up to eight voices one after another. Nothing is looked up in a dictionary and no registry or website is contacted, so the result is only as good as the voice: it is a synthesized reading, not a verified pronunciation.

Tip: choose voices whose language matches the word. A voice for another language applies that language’s spelling rules, which is why names and loanwords can sound very different between voices.

FAQ

How do I hear how a word is pronounced?

Type the word, choose a language, and press Play next to any voice. Each voice reads the word with its own speech engine, so you can compare several side by side.

Is this a dictionary pronunciation?

No. These are computer-generated voices from your device, not recordings of a person and not an authoritative pronunciation. Use it to compare, and confirm unusual names or terms in a dictionary that gives IPA or audio.

Why do the voices say the word differently?

Each voice has its own language rules and engine. A voice set to a different language will apply that language’s spelling-to-sound rules, so pick voices whose language matches the word.

Why are there no voices, or only a few?

The list is whatever your device and browser provide. Add more in your system speech settings and reload the page; the voices guide links to the official steps for Windows, macOS and Android.

Can I slow the word down?

Yes. Tick “Say it slowly” to use half speed. Rate is relative to each voice’s normal speed, and some voices limit the range.

Is my word sent anywhere?

Not by this page. Voices marked “online” use a remote speech service, so the browser may send the word to it; tick “Only on-device voices” to avoid that.
