What are the frequencies of the guitar strings?
Standard tuning defines the string pitches as E2 (82.41 Hz), A2 (110 Hz), D3 (146.83 Hz), G3 (196 Hz), B3 (246.94 Hz) and E4 (329.63 Hz), from the lowest-pitched string to the highest, with A4 at 440 Hz. Every other tuning on this page is a set of notes, converted with f = A4 × 2(semitones from A4) / 12.
Worked example. Drop D lowers only the low E string by a whole step, from E2 (82.41 Hz) to D2 (73.42 Hz); the other five strings stay the same. Tuning every string down a half step (E♭) puts the high string at D♯4, 311.13 Hz.
The tunings. Half step down lowers every string by one semitone. Whole step down (D standard) lowers every string by two semitones to D-G-C-F-A-D. DADGAD is D2 A2 D3 G3 A3 D4. Open G is D-G-D-G-B-D and open D is D-A-D-F♯-A-D, each giving a major chord when the open strings are strummed. Lower tunings slacken the strings, so a string gauge change or setup adjustment may be needed.
