What notes are in a chord?

Chords are built by stacking intervals above a root. A major triad is the root, a major third and a perfect fifth; a minor triad swaps in a minor third; a diminished triad has a minor third and a diminished fifth; an augmented triad has a major third and an augmented fifth. Suspended chords replace the third with a major second (sus2) or perfect fourth (sus4). Seventh chords add a seventh above the triad: major seventh (maj7), dominant seventh (7), minor seventh (m7), half-diminished (m7♭5), diminished seventh (dim7) and minor major seventh. A power chord is just the root and fifth.

Worked examples. G7 is G, B, D, F. B♭ minor is B♭, D♭, F. E major is E, G♯, B, with G♯ rather than A♭ because the third must be a G of some kind. C diminished seventh is C, E♭, G♭, B♭♭ (the seventh is a double flat, which sounds the same as A). Chord symbols vary between publishers; this page uses the common spellings shown in the list.

Frequently asked questions

What notes are in a G7 chord?

G, B, D and F: a G major triad plus a minor seventh.

What is the difference between major and minor chords?

The third. A major chord has a major third (4 semitones above the root) and a minor chord has a minor third (3 semitones).

What notes are in a sus4 chord?

The root, a perfect fourth and a perfect fifth. For Dsus4 that is D, G and A.

What is a power chord?

A two-note chord of the root and the perfect fifth, written 5. A5 is A and E.

Why are some notes written as double flats?

Chord notes are spelled by letter. A diminished seventh above C must be some kind of B, so it is B double-flat, which sounds the same as A.
