What the New York tool needs, variable by variable
The Tax Department's Check Your Refund Status asks for your Social Security number and the New York refund amount you requested, in whole dollars. A requested refund of $223.45 is entered as 223. It must be the New York amount, not the federal one. The line to read depends on the form and the year: for tax years 2020 to 2025 it is Line 78 of Form IT-201, Line 68 of IT-203 and Line 39 of IT-205. If that line is blank or zero you did not request a refund and the tool will not work.
After four failed attempts you are locked out for 24 hours. Staff cannot tell you the requested amount even after verifying your identity, so the fix is your own copy of the return, or the preparer who is required by law to give you one. If you have no copy, Form DTF-505 requests one and the department asks for 30 days. The tool also does not work for a payment (ask your bank) or for an amended return (call 518-457-5149).
The status messages the department lists
New York publishes the wording of its most common messages, and says it does not have a status for every processing step. A status can stay the same for a long time without a problem, unless a letter has been sent. The messages are decoded in the table below and by the situation menu in the tool above. The department updates a status whenever the return moves to a new stage, not at a set time of day, and the online tool, the automated phone line and the call centre representatives all see the same thing at the same time.
Status messages and what to do
| Message or situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The tool says my SSN or refund amount does not match | The refund amount you typed is not the New York refund you requested, or the SSN is wrong. The tool wants the whole-dollar New York amount, not the federal one. | Find the requested refund line on your IT-201 (Line 78 for 2020 to 2025), IT-203 (Line 68) or IT-205 (Line 39). After four wrong tries you are locked out for 24 hours. |
| "We have received your return and it is being processed" | A general processing status. The department says it is the status you will see throughout processing unless the return is selected for review or a letter is sent. | Nothing to do. Call centre staff see the same screen you do and have no more detail. |
| "Your return requires further review" | The automated system flagged the return, which may mean it takes longer than your federal return. The department says it can stay in this stage for an extended time. | Wait for a status change or a letter. The status can return to processing and the return can be selected for review again. |
| "We sent you a letter requesting additional information" | A Request for Information (Form DTF-948 or DTF-948-O) was mailed for a tax year 2020 or later return. Processing stops until you answer. | Respond online in Online Services under Respond to Department Notice, by the date on the letter. The letter should arrive within 2 weeks. |
| "We adjusted the refund amount you claimed" | The department changed your return and the refund will differ from what you requested. A DTF-160 or DTF-161 letter explains the adjustment. | Compare your return with the Explanation section of the notice. If you disagree, respond with supporting documents. |
| A direct deposit issue date is shown | The refund is scheduled for direct deposit on the date shown. | Allow 15 days from that date, then ask your bank. If you still have nothing, see the direct deposit troubleshooting tips on the Tax Department site. |
| I filed an amended return | The Check Your Refund Status tool does not work for amended returns. | Call 518-457-5149, the number the Tax Department lists for amended-return status. |
The 45-day interest mark and the 15-day bank check
Two dates can be computed. The first concerns interest. If your refund is not issued within 45 days of the due date or the date you filed, whichever is later, New York pays interest from that date; if it is issued inside 45 days, there is no interest. Interest is not paid on the part of a refund attributable to credits such as the real property tax credit, earned income credit, child and dependent care credit, college tuition credit, farmers' school tax credit, New York City school tax credit or the Pass Through Entity Tax (PTET), or when the return cannot be processed.
The second concerns direct deposit. When the status shows an issue date, allow 15 days from that date before asking your bank. If the money is not there 15 days after the date, check with the bank first; the department then points to its direct deposit troubleshooting tips.
When the refund changes or is taken
"Refund adjusted" means the department changed your return, for example a math error or credits claimed in error. You will receive Form DTF-160 or DTF-161 explaining the adjustment, and it may be a separate check if you were owed more. You can respond online (Respond to department notice) or by mail with documents. If you already responded to a letter about an adjusted refund, it may take several months, and responses are processed in the order received.
The department may also apply your refund to a debt owed to the Tax Department, another New York State agency (such as the Office of Temporary Disability Assistance), the IRS, or tax debt for another state. On a joint return where you are not liable for your spouse's debt, you disclaim your part of the refund by attaching Form IT-280 to the original return. If you did not file it, you cannot disclaim by amending; the department will tell you if it applies the refund to your spouse's debt, and you then have 10 days from the notification to send the form.
Worked example (hypothetical dates)
Say you file on May 20, 2026, after the due date, so that date drives the clock. The 45-day mark is Jul 4, 2026. If the status shows a direct deposit issue date of Jun 10, 2026, the 15-day mark to ask your bank is Jun 25, 2026. If the status reads "Refund adjusted", the DTF-160 letter carries the new amount and you compare it against the Explanation section. These dates are hypothetical.
Common mistakes
Entering cents or the federal refund. Calling to ask for the requested amount: staff cannot give it. Treating "being processed" as a delay: it is the normal middle state. Calling again after a letter was sent: processing cannot continue until you respond, and the Request for Information letter should arrive within 2 weeks of the status. Claiming a credit you are not eligible for: the department says that can add months.
Who this is for, and what it does not cover
It is for New York State personal income tax filers waiting on a refund. It does not look up your refund, which needs your SSN and sits behind the department, and it does not cover business refunds or amended returns. It never asks for your SSN or refund amount.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my NY state refund status?
Use the Tax Department's Check Your Refund Status tool, or the automated phone line at 518-457-5149. You need your SSN and the whole-dollar New York refund you requested.
Why does the NY tool say my information does not match?
The refund amount must be the New York amount in whole dollars, not the federal refund. After four failed tries the tool locks you out for 24 hours.
Where is my requested refund amount on my NY return?
For tax years 2020 to 2025 it is Line 78 of Form IT-201, Line 68 of IT-203 or Line 39 of IT-205.
What does "requires further review" mean on a NY refund?
The return was flagged by the automated system and may take longer than your federal return. The status can go back to processing, or you may receive a request for information.
What does "refund adjusted" mean?
The department changed your return and the refund differs from what you requested. You will receive Form DTF-160 or DTF-161 explaining why.
Will New York pay interest on a late refund?
If the refund is not issued within 45 days of the due date or filing date, whichever is later, interest is paid from that date, but not on the part tied to credits such as the earned income credit.
Can I check an amended NY return online?
No. The tool does not work for amended returns. Call 518-457-5149 to check an amended return.
How long until my NY direct deposit shows up?
The status gives an issue date. Allow 15 days from that date, then check with your bank.
