What the FTB tool needs
The FTB's Where's My Refund? asks for four things: your Social Security number, ZIP code, the exact refund amount, and the numbers in your mailing address (for 1234 Main Street, that is 1234). It cannot show prior-year refunds; for those you must contact the FTB. The FTB published this page's latest wording on April 16, 2026.
Windows this tool uses
E-file: The FTB says up to 3 weeks for an e-filed return. Paper: The FTB says up to 3 months for a paper return.
The two published windows
The FTB states the normal wait as e-file: up to 3 weeks and paper: up to 3 months. Both are ceilings, and the FTB adds that some returns and payments need extra review for accuracy, completeness and protection against fraud and identity theft. The FTB's separate Timeframes page lists longer figures for personal refunds: 1 month for e-file and 4 months for paper. The tool prints both sets, with the Where's My Refund? numbers first, so you can see both the ordinary mark and the outer one.
Direct deposit is the fastest delivery. You can set it up through tax software, a tax professional or the paper form (lines 116 and 117 on Form 540, lines 37 and 38 on Form 540 2EZ, lines 126 and 127 on Form 540NR). A wrong routing number can make your bank reject the refund, so check both numbers.
When the refund is a different amount
If the FTB changed your return, the refund can be more or less than you expected, and you will receive a Notice of Tax Return Change by mail. Common changes: withholding or payments that do not match FTB records, a credit you do not qualify for, and use of the refund to pay a past tax debt. The FTB asks you to wait for the letter before contacting it. In most cases you still get the changed refund by direct deposit.
The FTB can also send your refund to another agency. It names child support, vehicle registration collections and court-ordered debt as common examples, and points to its Interagency intercept page. If you took out a refund anticipation loan, questions go to your tax preparer.
Lost, damaged, stale or unexpected checks
A California refund check is good for six months from its issue date. After that you must send a request to the Returned Warrant Desk. For a check dated one to three years ago the FTB says to write with your name, the tax year, the subject "Old refund check" and a signature, enclose the original or a copy of the check (never write VOID on it), and allow at least eight weeks. If a refund you did not expect arrives because a payment was applied to the wrong year, the FTB says to endorse the check "Pay to the order of FTB", enclose a letter naming the correct year and mail it to the same desk.
California refund situations and next steps
| Situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| I am inside the normal window | The FTB gives up to 3 weeks for e-file and up to 3 months for paper. | Wait. Use Where's My Refund? with your SSN, ZIP code, exact refund amount and the numbers in your street address. |
| Past the window and no update | The FTB says some returns and payments need extra review for accuracy, completeness and fraud protection, which takes extra time. | Keep waiting and use the status tool. If a refund arrives for a different amount, the FTB asks you to wait for its letter before you contact it. |
| The refund is not the amount on my return | Common reasons: the FTB changed the return (withholding not matching, a credit not allowed, a past tax debt) or the refund went to a past-due debt. | You will get a Notice of Tax Return Change by mail with the new amount. Usually the changed refund still arrives by direct deposit. |
| My refund was used for a debt | Agencies can partner with the FTB to collect. Debts the FTB lists include child support, vehicle registration collections and court-ordered debt. | See Interagency intercept on ftb.ca.gov and contact the agency that claimed it. |
| This is a prior-year refund | The online tool does not show prior year refunds. | Contact the FTB to check a prior-year refund. |
| I cannot cash an old refund check | Checks expire after six months. | Send a letter to the Returned Warrant Desk (name, tax year, "Old refund check", signature). For a check 1 to 3 years old the FTB says allow at least 8 weeks. |
| I received a refund I did not expect | Usually a payment applied to the wrong year, or a refund when no return was filed. | Wrong year: return the check endorsed "Pay to the order of FTB" (do not write VOID) with a letter. Otherwise contact the FTB. |
Worked example (hypothetical dates)
File online on Feb 17, 2026 and the FTB's 3-week mark is Mar 10, 2026 (one month on the Timeframes page: Mar 17, 2026). Mail a paper return the same day and the 3-month mark is May 17, 2026 (four months: Jun 17, 2026). If a refund check is issued on Mar 2, 2026, it goes stale on Sep 2, 2026. The dates are hypothetical; the windows are the FTB's own.
Common mistakes
Calling at week four of a paper return: the paper window is up to three months. Treating the Timeframes page's one month as a promise; the refund page says up to 3 weeks. Typing the federal refund into the exact-amount box: it must be the California amount. Cashing late: a check issued in March goes stale in September. Writing VOID on a check you are returning.
Who this is for, and what it does not cover
It is for California resident, nonresident and part-year filers waiting on a Form 540, 540 2EZ or 540NR refund. It does not read your account, does not cover business refunds (the FTB publishes longer windows for those) or amended returns, and cannot tell you why a particular return was held. It just applies the FTB's published windows to your dates.
