How a county FIPS code is built
FIPS codes identify states and counties for federal data. Take the state code (for example 17 for Illinois) and add the county code (031 for Cook County) to get 17031. County codes repeat across states, so the 3-digit part alone is ambiguous.
About this data
Names and codes come from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2020 ANSI/FIPS county file (national_county2020.txt) and state file, public-domain data from the Census ANSI code lists. It lists 3,235 counties and county equivalents in the 50 states, DC and the territories. Connecticut appears with its eight legacy counties; the Census Bureau began using nine planning regions for Connecticut data from 2022, so check the Census page if you need those. Codes change occasionally when counties are created or merged, so confirm against the current Census release for legal or filing use.
