How the score is calculated

Each tile has a fixed value in the English-language set of 100 tiles: 1 point for E, A, I, O, N, R, T, L, S and U; 2 for D and G; 3 for B, C, M and P; 4 for F, H, V, W and Y; 5 for K; 8 for J and X; 10 for Q and Z; and 0 for the two blanks. A double letter square (DLS) multiplies that tile by 2 and a triple letter square (TLS) by 3. After the letter premiums, a double word square (DWS) doubles the whole word and a triple word square (TWS) triples it; covering two DWS makes x4 and two TWS makes x9. Using all 7 of your tiles in one play adds a 50-point bonus. Premium squares count only for tiles placed this turn, so set a tile to "1x" if it was already on the board.

Worked example

QUITE with the Q on a double letter square and the E on a double word square scores (2 x 10 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1) x 2 = 48, the example given in the Scrabble rules article. The calculator returns 48 for the same setup.

Limits

This scores one word. A real play can form several words at once (each is scored separately) and the tool does not check the board, your rack or whether the word is playable. Other games use their own tile values and bonuses and are not covered. Super Scrabble and other language editions use different distributions.

Scrabble word score calculator FAQ

In what order are Scrabble premium squares applied?

Letter premiums are applied first, then word premiums. A double letter or triple letter square multiplies only its tile, then a double word or triple word square multiplies the whole word. Two double word squares make the word worth four times, and two triple word squares nine times.

How much is a blank tile worth?

A blank tile scores zero points, but it can stand for any letter. A word square under a blank still multiplies the word, and a letter square under a blank multiplies zero.

Does this tool check whether a word is allowed?

No. It only adds up tile values and premiums. Use the Scrabble word finder to see which words can be made from a rack, and check the dictionary your game uses.
