How Morse code works
Every character is a pattern of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). Timing is defined in units of one dot, per ITU-R M.1677-1, the international Morse code standard:
- A dash is 3 dots long.
- The gap between the dots and dashes inside one letter is 1 dot.
- The gap between two letters is 3 dots.
- The gap between two words is 7 dots.
Speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), using the word PARIS as the yardstick. PARIS takes 50 dot-lengths to send, so one dot lasts 1200 / WPM milliseconds. At 15 WPM a dot is 80 ms and a dash is 240 ms.
Worked examples
SOS is ... --- .... Counting the dots, dashes and gaps above, it comes to 27 dot-lengths, so at 15 WPM it plays for 27 x 80 ms = 2.16 seconds.
HELLO WORLD is .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -... Single spaces separate letters and the slash separates the two words.
Decoding: to read -.-. .- -., look each group up: -.-. is C, .- is A and -. is N, giving CAN. For byte-based text conversions, use the binary converter.

Morse code translator FAQ
How do I translate text to Morse code?
Type or paste your text into the box. The translator shows the Morse code straight away, with a single space between letters and a slash between words. Use Copy to take it with you, or Play audio to hear it.
How do I translate Morse code to text?
Paste dots and dashes into the box. Separate letters with a space and words with a slash (/) or two or more spaces. The tool detects Morse input and decodes it as you type. If it guesses wrong, use the Text to Morse or Morse to Text button to force a direction.
How long is a dash, and how long are the gaps?
A dash is 3 dots. The gap inside a letter is 1 dot, between letters 3 dots and between words 7 dots, as set out in ITU-R M.1677-1.
What does WPM mean in Morse code?
Words per minute. The standard word is PARIS, which lasts 50 dot-lengths, so a dot lasts 1200 divided by the WPM in milliseconds. This tool plays from 5 to 40 WPM.
Can I download the Morse code as audio?
Yes. After translating text, choose Download WAV to save the tone at your chosen speed and pitch. Use Copy link to share the message as a link that opens with the same text.
Which characters are supported?
The 26 letters A to Z, the digits 0 to 9 and the punctuation shown in the chart above. Accented letters and non-Latin alphabets are not supported, and the tool tells you how many characters it skipped.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Translation and audio are generated in your browser, so what you type stays on your device.
