Trade & Shipping · Amazon tracking
TBA tracking number decoder.
Paste the TBA number from your Amazon order. The tool checks its shape, names what it is not, and the page explains Amazon’s own delivery statuses.
Short answer: a TBA number is the tracking ID Amazon shows for parcels in its own delivery network, written as TBA (or TBC, TBM) followed by 12 digits. Amazon does not publish that format or explain the letters, so a match here is an observed pattern, not an official one. This page cannot track a parcel; use Your Orders on Amazon for that.
What a TBA tracking number is
When Amazon delivers an order itself, the tracking number on your order page often starts with TBA. The open-source tracking dataset maintained by jkeen lists Amazon Logistics numbers as TB, then one of the letters A, C or M, then exactly 12 digits (for example TBM502887274000). That dataset is community data, not an Amazon document.
Amazon’s own help pages for tracking, missing tracking, late deliveries and carrier contact do not use the prefix or say what the letters stand for, and we found no Amazon page that does. You will see sites claim that TBA means “to be announced” or give a country for each letter. We found no Amazon source for any of that, so this page does not repeat it. What can be said with confidence is the shape.
To find the number on Amazon, open Your Orders, choose Track package next to the order, then All updates. Amazon says that screen shows the delivery updates and the tracking numbers. If you ordered several things they may ship separately, each with its own tracking.
How the check works, variable by variable
The decoder removes spaces and hyphens and capitalises the letters. It then tests four things in order: the first two characters must be TB; the third must be A, C or M; what follows must be digits only; and there must be exactly 12 of them. If all four hold, it prints the prefix and the 12-digit serial.
It also recognises four look-alikes so you can tell what you pasted. A 1Z number with 18 characters is a UPS number. Two letters, nine digits and two letters is the shape of a postal (S10) number. Seventeen digits is an Amazon order number without its hyphens. Ten letters and digits starting B0 is the shape of an ASIN. None of these is an Amazon Logistics tracking number, and mixing them up is the commonest mistake.
No check digit is applied. The dataset records none, Amazon publishes none, and inventing one would make the tool say “valid” or “invalid” with confidence it has not earned.
Worked example (test values from the open dataset)
TBM502887274000 is one of the dataset’s own test numbers, not a real shipment. It splits as TB + M + 502887274000: the third letter is M, and the serial is 12 digits, so it passes. TBC 000000000000 also passes because the space is ignored.
The dataset’s invalid examples show the rules biting. TBA50288727400A fails because the last character is a letter, not a digit. TBB000000000000 fails because B is not one of A, C or M. A hypothetical TBA00000000000 with only 11 digits fails on length, and the tool says how many digits it found rather than only “invalid”.
What Amazon’s delivery statuses mean
These are the four labels Amazon lists on its tracking help page, with its own meaning:
| Status | What Amazon says it means |
|---|---|
| Arriving | Usually followed by a date. Your package is on its way to you. |
| Out for delivery | Your package will be delivered today. |
| Delivered | Your package has been delivered, and might be in your safe space. |
| Undeliverable | Your package couldn’t be delivered and will be returned to Amazon, which then refunds you automatically once it receives the package back. |
Carriers use their own words, and Amazon simplifies them. Its comparison page maps three of its phrases to a carrier’s wording:
| Amazon tracking says | Carrier tracking says | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Available for pickup. | UPS: “Same Day Will Call”. | The package is available for pickup at the carrier’s facility. |
| Delivery attempted. | USPS: “Notice left”. | A delivery attempt was made for your package. |
| Shipment has left seller facility and is in transit. | UPS: “A UPS shipping label has been created”. | The shipment has left the Amazon or merchant fulfillment center. |
When there is no tracking number, or nothing moves
Amazon’s Missing Tracking Information page lists the reasons: the carrier has not yet scanned the package (common when volume is high), the tracking database is behind, some shipments such as standard international ones are not trackable, a marketplace seller has not shared tracking, or the order is a gift (the buyer gets the updates until delivery). For orders from third-party sellers, Amazon says tracking is available only if the seller shares it and you chose a trackable shipping option.
For a late parcel Amazon’s advice is to allow 48 hours past the estimated delivery date, then, for orders shipped by Amazon, contact Customer Service within 30 days of that date; for third-party sellers, contact the seller. An Undeliverable status means the package will be returned to Amazon and, according to Amazon’s Undeliverable Packages page, you can expect a refund within 7 business days after the return is received (your bank may need another 3 to 5 business days). One reason Amazon lists is that the carrier made three unsuccessful attempts to reach the delivery address.
Who this is for
Buyers who copied a TBA number from an Amazon order and are not sure what it is, sellers and support staff who need to tell a tracking ID from an order number or an ASIN in a spreadsheet, and anyone cleaning a list of mixed carrier numbers.
What this does not cover
- It does not track a parcel, show a location or status, or confirm that the number was ever issued.
- It does not identify carriers other than flagging the three look-alike shapes above.
- It does not decode what the letters A, C and M mean, because Amazon does not say.
- It does not store, send or log what you type.
Frequently asked questions
What is a TBA tracking number?
It is the tracking ID shown for many packages that Amazon delivers through its own network. The observed shape is TBA, TBC or TBM followed by 12 digits. Amazon does not publish the format, so this is an observed pattern, not an official specification.
What does TBA stand for?
Amazon does not say. We found no Amazon help page that explains the letters. Claims that it means “to be announced” or that each letter marks a country are not supported by any Amazon source we could read, so we do not repeat them.
How many digits are in a TBA tracking number?
The observed pattern is the three-letter prefix followed by exactly 12 digits, 15 characters in all. A number with more or fewer digits does not match the pattern and is worth copying again from your order page.
Where do I find my tracking number on Amazon?
Open Your Orders, select Track package next to the order, then All updates. Amazon says that view shows delivery updates and tracking numbers. Some shipments, such as standard international ones, may not be trackable at all.
What do Arriving, Out for delivery, Delivered and Undeliverable mean?
Arriving means the package is on its way, usually with a date. Out for delivery means it will be delivered today. Delivered means it has been delivered and might be in your safe space. Undeliverable means it could not be delivered and will return to Amazon, which then refunds you automatically.
Why does my Amazon order have no tracking number yet?
Amazon lists several reasons: the carrier has not scanned the package yet, the tracking database is delayed, the shipment type is not trackable, a marketplace seller has not shared tracking, or the order is a gift. When the carrier makes its first scan, details appear in Your Orders.
Does a number that matches prove a parcel exists?
No. This page checks the shape only, in your browser. It does not contact Amazon or any carrier, and a well-formed number can still be mistyped into a different real one. Use Your Orders on Amazon to see the real status.
What are TBC and TBM numbers?
The open tracking dataset lists TBC and TBM, as well as TBA, as Amazon Logistics prefixes. Amazon does not explain the difference, so this page treats all three the same and does not guess at a meaning.
