How long will a tournament take?
Each time slot runs as many games as you have courts, but a team can only play one game at a time. So the schedule is built round by round. A round robin with n teams has at most ⌊n/2⌋ games per round, so more courts than that add nothing. In single elimination the first round has n − (bracket size)/2 games and each later round halves.
Total time is the number of slots times (game length + changeover), minus the last changeover. Slots are the sum over rounds of games in that round divided by the courts, rounded up. Double elimination depends on how matches fall, so the result there is a best-case lower bound from total games divided by courts.
Worked example. 8 teams, single round robin, 2 courts, 30 minute games and 5 minute changeovers: 28 games over 7 rounds of 4; each round needs 2 slots, so 14 slots of 35 minutes = 485 minutes (8 h 5 min). With 4 courts it falls to 7 slots, 240 minutes. This estimate ignores rest time between a team's games, warm-ups and delays.
Frequently asked questions
How many courts do I need for a round robin?
At most half the number of teams, rounded down, since every team plays once per round. To finish in a set window, enter it above and the tool finds the smallest number of courts that fits.
How long does a round robin take?
Slots times slot length. With 8 teams, one court and 30 minute games, 28 games take 14 hours plus changeovers; with 4 courts it takes about 3.5 hours.
Does it include rest between games?
No. It assumes teams can play back to back. Add the rest time you want to the changeover for a safer estimate.
Why is double elimination only a lower bound?
Its rounds vary in size depending on who is still alive, so the tool uses total games divided by courts as the best case.
