How the random time generator works
The window runs from the From time to the To time, both included. The Step sets how far apart the possible times are, starting at From. With From 09:00, To 17:00 and a 15-minute step there are 33 possible times (09:00, 09:15 … 17:00), each equally likely. With a one-minute step across the whole day there are 1,440 possible times.
Overnight windows. If From is later than To, the window wraps past midnight. From 22:00 to 02:00 with an hourly step gives 22:00, 23:00, 00:00, 01:00 or 02:00. If From and To are the same, there is exactly one possible time.
12-hour and 24-hour display
The 24-hour display shows 00:00 to 23:59. In 12-hour display, 00:00 is shown as 12:00 AM (midnight), 12:00 is 12:00 PM (noon) and 13:05 is 1:05 PM. The underlying draw is identical; only the label changes. Sorting puts times in clock order from 00:00, so an overnight window sorts with the after-midnight times first.
Uses
- Pick a random time for a reminder, a spot check, a quiz question or a “surprise” alarm.
- Generate timestamps for test data or sample schedules; use a 5- or 15-minute step to make them look like real appointment slots.
- Choose a random meeting slot inside working hours: From 09:00, To 16:30, 30-minute step.
Randomness comes from the browser’s secure generator, crypto.getRandomValues(), mapped onto the possible times with rejection sampling so no slot is favoured. This tool picks a time of day only. It has no date or time zone.
Frequently asked questions
How do I generate a random time?
Set the window with From and To, choose a step and press Generate time. The default window is the whole day, 00:00 to 23:59, in one-minute steps.
Can I get times in 12-hour AM/PM format?
Yes. Set Clock to 12-hour. Midnight shows as 12:00 AM and noon as 12:00 PM.
Can the window cross midnight?
Yes. If From is later than To, for example 22:00 to 02:00, the window wraps past midnight.
How do I get times on the quarter hour?
Set Step to every 15 minutes and start the window on the hour, for example 09:00. Times then land on :00, :15, :30 and :45.
Does it include a date or time zone?
No. It generates a time of day only. Use the random date generator for dates.
Can I generate several different times?
Yes. Set How many and turn on "No repeats". You cannot ask for more times than the window and step allow.

Checked
Time-of-day values are written as hh:mm, the format in the W3C profile of ISO 8601, and the 12-hour labels follow the standard AM/PM convention. Window arithmetic, step handling, overnight wrap and no-repeat limits are unit-tested. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter or generate is sent anywhere or stored.
Scope
A general-purpose random tool. It generates clock times only and does not apply time zones or daylight-saving rules.
