How do byes and seeding work in a single elimination bracket?

A single elimination bracket works cleanly when the field is a power of two (2, 4, 8, 16, 32 …). For any other number of teams the bracket is rounded up to the next power of two, and the empty places are byes. The number of byes is 2k − n, where 2k is the smallest power of two that is at least n. A team with a bye advances without playing. This tool gives the byes to the top seeds, a common convention.

Standard seeding pairs the highest and lowest seed, the second highest and second lowest, and so on, so every first-round pairing adds up to the bracket size plus one (1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6, 4 v 5 in an 8-team bracket). The sequence is arranged so seeds 1 and 2 can only meet in the final.

Worked example. 6 teams: the bracket is 8, so there are 2 byes for seeds 1 and 2. Seeds 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 play in round 1, and the winners meet seeds 1 and 2 in the semifinals. Games = 6 − 1 = 5 because each game eliminates exactly one team.

Frequently asked questions

How many byes are there in a single elimination bracket?

The bracket size (next power of two at or above the number of teams) minus the number of teams. For 12 teams the size is 16, so 4 byes.

Who gets the byes?

Rules differ, but giving byes to the top seeds is a common convention and is what this tool does, so the bracket is filled in seed order.

How many games are in a single elimination tournament?

n − 1 for n teams, because every game eliminates one team and only one champion remains.

How many rounds are there?

The number of rounds is log base 2 of the bracket size, rounded up for the number of teams: 3 rounds for 5 to 8 teams, 4 rounds for 9 to 16.

Is there a third-place game?

Not generated here. If you play one, it is an extra game between the two semifinal losers.

Wikipedia states that standard seeding pairs the highest and lowest seeds, second highest and second lowest, and so on, and that competitors with a bye enter in a later round. The n − 1 games, rounds = log2 of bracket size and 2k − n byes are arithmetic from those rules and are unit-tested here. Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored.
