How are league standings and tiebreakers worked out?

Teams are ranked by points: in the common 3-1-0 system a win is 3 points, a draw 1 and a loss 0. Three points for a win was used at the 1994 World Cup finals, formally adopted by FIFA in 1995, and is now standard in international tournaments, but you can change the values for your own league. When teams finish level on points, a tiebreaker decides. Common ones are overall goal difference, goals scored, and head-to-head results; which comes first varies by competition. Wikipedia notes that FIFA competitions use goal difference first, while UEFA and AFC competitions use head-to-head points first.

How this tool applies them. It sorts by points, then applies your chosen criteria in order. If a criterion splits a tied group into smaller groups, the order is applied again to each smaller group, and head-to-head points are recalculated using only games among the teams still level. Teams that cannot be separated share a rank and are marked with an asterisk.

Worked example. B and C both have 6 points. C beat B 1-0 but B has the better goal difference. With goal difference first, B ranks above C; with head-to-head first, C does.

Always check your own competition's rules: this tool uses the orders in the menu and does not include fair play points, away goals or drawing of lots.

Frequently asked questions

What is the tiebreaker if two teams have the same points?

It depends on the competition. Common choices are goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head results. Pick the order your rules use in the menu above.

How many points is a win?

Three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss is the common system in international football since the 1990s. You can change the values here for other sports and leagues.

How does head-to-head work with three tied teams?

The tool builds a mini-table from only the games between the tied teams and ranks on that. If that still leaves a smaller tie, it applies the criteria again to the teams left level.

How do I enter results?

One per line as "Team A 2-1 Team B". The score can use a hyphen, colon or en dash, and team names can contain spaces.
